This antique Early American Pattern Glass (EAPG) comport, standing 5 1/4 inches tall, was crafted around 1900 by the Indiana Tumbler & Goblet Company of Greentown, Indiana. It features the beloved Cactus pattern and is finished in the warm cocoa-brown shade known as Greentown Chocolate Glass. This distinctive glass was produced in limited quantities before the Greentown factory fire of 1903, making surviving pieces especially desirable to collectors today.
The pedestal form, scalloped rim, and intricate pressed details showcase the artistry and quality of turn-of-the-century American glassmaking. Offered in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs, this comport is a rare find that reflects both beauty and historical significance.
It is important to note that many reproduction pieces of Greentown Chocolate Glass exist, but this comport is an authentic antique. A key way to identify original Cactus pattern glass is by examining the beading: on true Greentown pieces, the beading completely surrounds and continues between the plant segments. On reproductions, the beading does not carry through all of the segments. This comport displays the correct and continuous beading, confirming its authenticity.
For collectors of EAPG, Greentown Chocolate Glass holds a special place in American glass history. Its scarcity, distinctive coloring, and intricate design make this comport a meaningful addition to any antique glass collection or a striking decorative accent in the home.
