NOTE: The Gillinder Frosted Lion covered compote with the rare “Lion & Stump” finial was reportedly never reproduced, which strongly supports this being an authentic piece from 1877. While many Frosted Lion items have been widely copied, the compote is considered original, and its survival in such excellent condition makes it a highly desirable acquisition for collectors of Early American Pattern Glass.

This Gillinder & Sons Frosted Lion covered compote is an impressive and historically significant example of 19th-century American pressed glass artistry. Measuring 8 inches tall and 8.75 inches long, it features frosted lions reclining gracefully around the base, framed by finely carved grass and palm motifs, while the lid is crowned with the distinctive “Lion & Stump” finial. The contrast of frosted detail against the clarity of the glass gives the piece both depth and elegance, hallmarks of Gillinder’s celebrated craftsmanship.

Notably, this compote was discovered at the same time as a set of Gillinder Frosted Lion dessert coupes, making them natural companions for display or collection. Together, the coupes and this covered compote form a striking, historically meaningful grouping that beautifully illustrates the artistry and sophistication of American glassmaking in the late 19th century.

For collectors evaluating authenticity, it is important to note that original Gillinder examples are generally heavier than reproductions, the lions display sharper and more intricate carving—particularly in the mane and facial features—and the glass is notably clear and luminous rather than cloudy. These identifying traits are evident in this compote, further affirming its originality.

The condition is excellent, with no chips, cracks, or clouding, and the glass sparkles with clarity. Given its rarity, quality, and documented absence of reproductions, this covered compote represents both a beautiful display piece and a significant acquisition for advanced EAPG collectors.
