Alphonse Lafitte, more widely recognized under the name Manuel Robbe, was a distinguished French printmaker and painter celebrated for his innovative use of aquatint and color etching during the Belle Époque and early 20th century. Robbe studied at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he honed his skill in traditional techniques before pioneering new approaches that allowed for extraordinary depth of tone and painterly effects in etching.
Working in Paris between the 1890s and 1930s, Robbe produced intimate domestic scenes, portraits, and landscapes, often featuring women and children in atmospheric settings. His etchings combined technical precision with a soft impressionistic style, giving them both refinement and warmth. His works were published in limited editions and are highly prized for their artistry, rarity, and historical significance. Today, Manuel Robbe is a listed artist with pieces represented in museum collections and fine art institutions worldwide.
